Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple – Trivandrum Covering an area of about 2,400 sq. mts, the temple of Sri Padmanabhaswamy is believed to be around 260 years old. The temple with its gopuram (tower) soaring majestically upwards is believed to be one of the 108 shrines sacred to the Vaishnavites in India. The main entrance to the temple is through the eastern gopuram that towers to over 30 metres and is devised in the Dravidian style.

 

The deity of the temple, Padmanabha (an incarnation of Vishnu) reclines on the sacred serpent in the inner sanctum. The main shrine inside the temple is well guarded with a number of massive doors and darshan (audience) can be had through the three-door openings into the sanctum sanctorum.

 

Sree chitra gallery Sree Chithra Art Gallery is open for public from 1000 to 1645 hrs. This gallery is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays afternoons.

 

This gallery is situated adjacent to the Napier museum and has an explicit collection of Raja Ravi Varma paintings and excellent works of the Mughal, Rajput and Tanjore art schools are displayed. The displays also include china, Tibet, Bali and Japanese paintings.

 

The architecture has a combination of Kerala tradition. Bronze images, ivory carvings, temple chariots and historical ornaments present an excellent collection. One can spend few hours easily viewing all the displays

 

Veli tourist village Bordered by Veli lagoon and the Arabian Sea, the village include water sports, Waterfront Park, floating bridge, children's park, restaurant, garden etc. it is 8km. away from the city. Visiting hours: 10am. To 8.30pm.

 

Museum and gallery The zoo and a collection of museums are in a park i the north of the city. The museums are in a park in the north of the city. The museums are open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 4.45pm, but not until 1pm on Wednesday. A single Rs.5 entry ticket covers all the museums and is obtainable from the Natural History of Museum. Housed in a whimsical, decaying, Keralan style building dating from 1880, the Napier Museum displays an electric assortment of bronzes, historical and contemporary ornaments, temple carts, ivory carvings and life size figures of Kath kali dancers in full costume.

 

The Natural History Museum has a rudimentary ethnographic collection as well as an interesting replica of a Nayar wooden house built in the Keralan style.

 

Padmanabhapuram Palace; It Was once the seat of the rulers of Travancore, a princely state for more than 400 years which included a large part of present day Kerala and the Western coast of Tamil Nadu.Padmanabhapuram is just inside Tamilnadu, 65km south-east of Thiruvananthapuram. To get there, you can either catch a local bus from Thiruvananthapuram or Kovalam beach or take one of the Kanyakumari tours organized by the KTDC. The palace is closed on Monday.
